Are stun guns effective?

They work quite well if you can hold them against an attacker for 1-5 seconds and varies from person to person. The effectiveness of a Stun Gun depends greatly on where the electricity is applied. Fat does not conduct electricity well but muscle and nerves do. If the Stun Gun is applied to a fatty area of the body then the only effect will be a painful zap. If your ultimate goal is to incapacitate your attacker, then you will need to hit a major muscle group or an important nerve to be effective. (i.e armpit, neck, face, chest, abdomen or the inside of the legs are just few examples)

How does a stun gun work?

The basic objective of a Stun Gun is to disrupt the body's communication system. A Stun Gun generates a high-voltage, low-amperage electrical charge. In simple terms, this means that the electrical charge has a lot of power behind it, but not that much strength. When you press the stun gun against an attacker and hold the trigger, the electrical charge passes into the attacker's body disrupting his/her communication system. Since it has a fairly high voltage, the charge will pass through heavy clothing and skin. At around 3 milliamps, the electrical charge is not intense enough to damage the attacker's body unless it is applied for an extended period of time.
